What is CoTZ?
CōTZ stands for Contains Only Titanium and Zinc. All of our products use only the mineral sunscreen active ingredients Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide in sheer, elegant formulas.
Why should I use a mineral sunscreen?
Mineral sunscreens work differently from chemical sunscreens, and we believe those differences make mineral sunscreens healthier:
Mineral sunscreens reflect and refract UV light away from the skin. Chemical sunscreens work by absorbing ultraviolet light on/into your skin and creating a reaction that produces heat.
Mineral sunscreens don’t penetrate the skin. Chemical sunscreens can penetrate the skin and reach other tissues.
Mineral sunscreens rarely cause skin allergies. Chemical sunscreens are more likely to cause allergic reactions.
What makes your mineral sunscreens different from other mineral sunscreens?
CōTZ mineral sunscreens are known for their uncommonly light, silky feel and virtually invisible appearance on skin. That’s because we use only the highest quality active and inactive ingredients, delivering excellent protection in formulas that are a pleasure to wear.
Are your products reef safe?
All CōTZ products meet Reef Friendly guidelines, meaning they are 100% free of the chemical sunscreen actives Oxybenzone and Octinoxate, as well as all other chemical sunscreen actives. There is currently no specific test for Reef Friendly certification.
Are your sunscreens non-nano?
CōTZ sunscreens contain a proprietary blend of multiple-sized particles that form a protective physical barrier to reflect and refract UV radiation. In their raw state, some of these particles may be nano-sized, but before formulation the Titanium and Zinc Oxide particles are coated with inert ingredients, so they are “non-nano” as used in the products.
Do your products contain parabens?
All CōTZ products are free of parabens and other preservatives.
Are CoTZ products tested on animals?
We do not test CoTZ products on animals, and do not include any ingredients that are tested on animals.
Are CōTZ products gluten free?
Yes, all CōTZ products are gluten free.
What gives CōTZ tinted products their color? Do they contain dyes?
CōTZ products do not contain dyes or fragrances. The tint in our tinted products comes from Iron Oxide, a natural mineral ingredient.
- Will the non-tinted products make my skin white?
Why doesn’t CōTZ make a sunscreen spray?
CōTZ does not make spray formulations. CōTZ Silky Foam SPF 30 (tinted or nontinted) is a foaming mousse that is exceptionally light and easy to spread.
Mineral sunscreens are highly effective and are very safe when applied to the skin. Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide do not penetrate the skin. However, we at CōTZ do not believe that sunscreen ingredients (mineral or chemical) should be formulated in sprays where they could easily be inhaled.
Are your products water resistant?
Most CōTZ products are water resistant. The only exception is CōTZ Flawless Complexion SPF 50. The length of time for water resistance (40 minutes or 80 minutes) is found at the bottom of the front label.
Are CōTZ products safe to use with tattoos?
High quality sun protection is important to protect your tattoo from fading UV light. CōTZ mineral sunscreens are perfect for tattoos because they reflect the UV light away and don’t absorb it into the ink. Always wait until your tattoo has healed before applying sunscreen or exposing it to the sun.
Where are your products made?
All CoTZ products are made in the U.S.
Where can I find the expiration date?
The expiration date is stamped into the crimp of CoTZ tubes. On Silky Foam bottles, it is printed on the bottom.
Do your products contain Benzene?
We absolutely share your concern about the presence of benzene detected in some sunscreens and after-sun in recent testing. Since the lab that performed the testing did so independently, they clearly were able to test only a small subset of the many sunscreen and after sun products available. CoTZ was not included in this testing. Our products are not part of any recall or any requested recall.
We have no reason to believe that there is benzene in any CoTZ product, as we do not use any ingredients that contain or would break down to benzene. Because safety is of utmost importance, we are arranging for our products to be tested by an independent lab to verify that they contain no traces of benzene.
Please note also that the sunscreens used in CoTZ do not penetrate the skin. While this is independent of the benzene question, sunscreen penetration was raised as a potential added concern in some of the articles reporting on this recent study.
